Deck View: Smoke & Mirrors Gold Private Reserve Playing Cards

Elegant. Stylish. Prestigious.

Perhaps one of the most elusive deck of playing cards Dan and Dave have ever produced. The Smoke & Mirrors playing cards were originally designed to be a personal deck for Dan and Dave. They were custom tailored to their taste with original art by Si Scott.

The courts of the Private Reserve are standard with a touch of gold in place of the traditional colors. The Ace of Spades and Jokers are custom and beautifully designed to fit the Dan and Dave's minimal yet sophisticated style.

Limited to just 2,500 sets each deck is inspected prior to being wrapped in gold foil and placed inside a beautiful tuck. Excluding the occasional sale and promotion by Dan and Dave, the only way to get one of these decks is in person.

Collections: Tally Ho Viper by Ellusionist

The Tally Ho Vipers were another of the early "Custom" playing card releases that started the insanity we see today....not that it's a bad thing, but who would have predicted what was to come.

The Vipers feature a slightly thicker stock than standard Tally Ho's, but outside of the slight customization found on the tuck, the decks are identical, although inverted, reproductions of the classic deck. Available as Fan backs as well as Circle backs, the two versions vary only slightly. Both versions feature silver metallic inks, but the Circle backs add a splash of color by retaining the heats and diamonds classic red color. I love these decks, the contrast is striking and they do feel and handle really well. Being one of the 1st decks in the initial flood of custom decks also makes them a special part of a collection.

Between the two, I would have to side slightly with the Circle backs, only because the red pop of color from the Hearts and Diamonds just stands out so well. The good news is you can still pick these up here and there without too much of a financial burden.

News: The Second Annual PCF Deck Design Competition Sponsored by the Expert Playing Card Company

Do you have a design idea for a playing card deck?

It's that time of the year to take your design, hammer out the dents, then present it at the Discourse! After what was a very successful first effort, PlayingCardForum.com (PCF) and the Expert Playing Card Company (EPCC) have decided to hold their second annual design competition for playing card deck designers.

Originally known as the "Discourse Deck Design Contest," the PCF Deck Design Competition will follow the format of the first competition almost exactly. Entries will be judged by the forum's general membership by way of election, and the winning design will be produced by EPCC.

How It Works

Stage One is now underway. The competition will begin the design review stage, which will last for four weeks. Designers are encouraged (though not required) to post their designs at PCF's Design and Development message board for the membership to review and provide comments.

Stage Two begins Wednesday, July 15th 12:00 AM EDT: Official entry topic will be opened in PCF's Playing Card Plethora message board. Designers will have one week in which to post their designs and officially enter the competition.

Stage Three starts Wednesday, July 22, 12:00 AM EDT: the entry phase will close and no further entries will be accepted. Shortly thereafter, members will be asked to vote on their favorite design.

Stage Four starts Wednesday, July 29, 12:00 AM EDT: the voting stage ends. If one design has received a clear majority (any amount greater than 50%) of the vote, it will be declared the winner of the competition.

If there is a plurality, the two most voted-for designs will have a run-off election to last for two days, ending Friday, July 31, 12:00 AM EDT.

The Prize

The winning artist receiving 432 copies (3 gross, or 36 dozen) decks of their design. Last year's winning design, the Evil Deck by Giovanni Meroni, is presently on sale and available at the Conjuring Arts Research Center's online store.

This is the kind of contest where you can win without actually being the winner, just from the exposure that your design receives. Also, you might get an indication of the responses for that Kickstarter project you've been thinking of, or perhaps you'll catch the attention of a design house that's interested in your work!

Giovanni has been a success story. Starting his own company Thirdway Industries and successfully funding two decks, Delirium and Omnia on Kickstarter.

Head on over to the Discouse and start your journey!

Deck View: AVES Playing Cards

Birds. Whimsical. Feathers.

Designed by world-class artist Karina Eibatova and produced by LUX Playing Cards, Aves is a beautiful deck of playing cards inspired by birds from all over the world. These fine art playing cards were hand drawn before being turned into digital art prior to being transformed into gorgeous playing cards.

Each individual cards is a work of art by itself and these 56 custom cards are amazingly detailed and meticulously illustrated by hand. The card back features feathers from many bird types tied together with a beautiful, one of a kind coordination. The tuck is embellished with a raised texture to further accentuate the design.

The AVES Playing Cards are a limited print run through USPCC on luxurious Bicycle card stock and available from JP Games.

Indiegogo: 7 Questions with Benjamin Loo of Mantecore Playing Cards

Inspired by their love for this majestic beast, Mantecore Playing Cards is a bold deck of cards designed by Edo Huang and Benjamin Loo. The deck was named as a tribute to magicians Siegfried and Roy's famous tiger.

Fully custom, Mantecore features an intricate back design inspired by one of the most classic back design, the Rider Backs. The pips have a fresh new look but are yet easily recognisable. The court have been simplified, enlarged and tweaked to look younger. Also, the borders that restrict the royals have also been removed and the colours have been updated to match the deck theme.

We managed to have a quick chat with Benjamin about his collaboration with Edo, the inspiration behind Mantecore and thoughts about playing cards on social media.

Can you tell us about yourself and how did you end-up collaborating with Edo Huang?
I am Benjamin from Singapore and I have been doing magic for about 8 years now and I have a degree in Psychology. It started off when we took interest on each other's Instagram posts. We then exchanged contacts (sounds like a love story so far) and started discussing about magic and playing card designs. Soon after, I tossed some ideas to Edo and he really liked them and the rest is history.

This is your first Indiegogo project. When did you first start thinking about using Indiegogo? What made you decide to take the plunge?
After the designs were underway, we had to have a platform to share it. I then researched on the platforms available and narrowed down to Indiegogo and Kickstarter. Kickstarter seemed like the obvious choice but we soon found out that we were not able to start a campaign due to where we were from and they do not allow funds collected on Kickstarter to be donated. Thus we turned to Indiegogo and have never looked back.

We decided to take the plunge sometime last year when Edo wanted to do a design that was more elaborate than what he has already put out. He contacted me and I shared my concept with him. We thought that a cross-country collaboration would be awesome and explored that idea to what it is today.

What is your inspiration behind Mantecore Playing Cards? How did you come up with the idea?
I think that tigers are really majestic beasts and am a little saddened that the population of my favourite animal is dwindling. I have long wanted a deck with tigers as the main theme for that reason. I also really like Mark Stutzman's work with the Split Spades and Whispering Imps. Thus I contacted Edo and shared this idea with him. We incorporated this with the most classic back designs and Mantecore was born.

What role did you play in the art direction and how much time did you spend working on the deck?
I basically told Edo what I wanted as a skeleton of the deck and gave him free rein on how he wanted to translate that into pen and paper. He would then submit what he drew and we would discuss and refine the artwork. Believe it or not the first draft of the deck was nothing like the final product.

Most of my time after work and during the weekends were spend either discussing the drafts with Edo, marketing the deck, discussing about the deck with Lawrence from Legends Playing Card Company or setting up the campaign for the decks since the start of the year.

We initially noticed Mantecore on Social Media predominantly Instagram. What do you think of the playing card community on Social Media?
The number of media on Instagram that has playingcards as a hash tag is currently 160,000 and counting. I love the community on Instagram. That is where I found many super awesome friends who are so skilled and talented. It is also a great platform where people can share crazy pictures of their playing card collection, new moves or flourishes that they just learnt in 15 seconds or under. Some people like @lost_angelus, @shoe32 and @playingcardart are sharing some really eye catching pictures involving playing cards. Go give them a follow If you haven't already.

Social media also connects people from all around the world, which is I like about it. Sharing of ideas can now be done so easily. It is actually how Edo and came to know each other. Without Instagram, there would not have been Mantecore.

With so many playing card projects competing for funding, why should potential backers choose your deck?
Our campaign tagline is " Shuffling Stripes with a Cause". We didn't want Mantecore to be just another deck of cards, we wanted it to have a cause as well. Thus we added a line on the side of the box that says "Save the Tigers" to remind people of their dwindling numbers. We would also donate 5% of profits after the campaign to the Save The Tiger - Panthera Fund.

The entire deck is also custom, from the box, right down to the pips. We have not 1 but 4 custom aces; tweaked court cards that are simplified and look younger but are still familiar to the lay audience; as well as a joker reveal and a double backer for the magicians out there. The backs of Mantecore also has subtle area where magicians can mark their decks.

Finally, what are your favourite playing card decks?
My favourite decks are the Smoke and Mirrors series as well as Split Spades. The design and handling of those decks are what sets them apart.

Awesome! At the time of writing, the project is only 18% funded with 31 days to go. If want to support the Mantecore Playing Cards, you can find it on Indiegogo here

Mantecore Playing Cards will be printed by LPCC and pledge starts from $8.

Collections: Propaganda by Theory 11

The Propaganda deck was released by Theory 11 in 2011 and is one of the early "Semi-Custom" decks that became scarce pretty quickly. The deck uses the same formula many decks did back then, standard courts and face cards with customized Ace of Spades, Jokers and of course the card backs. Now a days we've become more demanding of custom decks, but there is something to be said of some of these early and unique decks.

The cards themselves handle very well as a USPC deck usually does. You get the added bonus of a double backer and that's the meat and potatoes of this deck. As for the design appeal, Propaganda is one of my favorites; it just presents the concept so well from just a few elements. The back has a beautiful two-way design, covered by all sorts of military imagery. If you tried to describe it in a few words you probably couldn't. The elements on the back, from the bombers in the corners to the artillery shells lining the sides to the eye catching gas masks, are just so well balanced and then to tie it all together it's dropped on a background accented by a "Medallion" surrounded by some subtle yet intricate line work. The design just flows so well and it's a super entertaining deck to have in your collection. The tuck box isn't embossed or foiled in any way, but the front design carries some of the back design elements to it and really fits well. To be honest, once the tuck was a bit weathered, it looked even better.

Propaganda became a collectible deck as time went by, not many sealed decks were available since way back when people actually opened and enjoyed their cards, and once Theory 11 sold out of the decks set aside in their Archive, they've been a little harder to find, but not impossible. They're also a bit on the pricey side starting at about $30.00, but don't be surprised by higher asking prices, have some patience and you'll get a good deal.

Kickstarter: 7 Questions with Justin Froyd of the Black Widow - Playing Cards

Back in September of 2014 Justin Froyd was busy working on his 1st successful Kickstarter campaign Coat of Arms, a colorful vibrant custom deck based on the imagery and style you would find on many Coat of Arms of that period.

Justin is now returning for his sophomore project in the custom card arena, this time with Black Widow. Little has been said about the deck in the community or by Justin himself, so we were grateful for the opportunity and the time Justin was nice enough to give us on his latest project.

With the success of your 1st Kickstarter project, Coat of Arms, what lessons did you bring to this project?

My Coat of Arms project was a wonderful and exciting learning experience. I learned so much.  One specific lesson I learned a lot about is developing business relationships.  There have been so many people that have been so nice and have taught me a great deal about creating a successful project.  Many of these business relationships have become friendships and  I thank everyone that has helped me though this process.

Your new project, Black Widow, seems to be quite different than your 1st, what inspired the concept?

I have always thought that spider webs are amazing.  The design and strength of spider webs are mind blowing.  Something so light and thin to be so strong and intricate.  I thought it would be cool to bring all the traits of a spider to a playing card project.  Growing up in Arizona I have encounter black widow spiders on more than one occasion. Once I see the distinct red hour glass shape I usually ran for the hills. My black widow spider themed deck shows design, strength and uniqueness.

What aspects of this project excite you the most and why?

The aspects of the project that excite me the most of this project is red foil on the back of the card of the Black Deck.  This premium feature will really make the red hour glass on the back of the Black Deck really pop.  Also the Black and Red tuck boxes will have embossed and foil features along with a printed pattern on the inside of the tuck boxes.

Do you have a “Creative Process” and does it change from design to design, what was it for Black Widow?

I constantly think and brainstorm ideas that I can incorporate into a cool playing card theme.  I keep a list of my ideas and I then choose one of the ideas that I think Gonzo (Artist/Illustrator) and I can make really cool.  Then I meet with Gonzo and show him my sketches and we talk about the direction of the project. After that the card images begin to be developed.

Was Black Widow geared towards a specific type of playing card aficionado?

I really wanted to provide a deck of cards for everyone to enjoy.  There were a few aspects I wanted to focus on.  I like to play poker so I always want to have two different colored decks for the home games.  I also wanted to provide a "standard" court card feel but have Gonzo work his magic by making everything original and custom art.  I wanted the "standard" court cards to have our flare to them.  Also, I wanted to have an amazing back design for all my flourishing, cardistry and magician supporters.

Can backers expect any bonuses or surprises during this campaign?

Absolutely! One of the cool bonuses is the Black Deck has red foil on the back of the cards and the red deck as a stretch goal to have white foil on the back of the cards.  Another bonus I am excited about is a unique playing card case that will be available.  This is a cigar style box with a magnetic clasp.  There is a single and double case option. The cases are all hand made.

Lastly, could you share your opinions of the continuing growth in crowdfunded playing card projects?

The growth has been amazing! As a collector of playing cards I have been able to both offer and purchase unique decks through crowdfunding.  There are many talented people creating some really cool projects.  As a creator, the growth in crowdfunded playing card projects has really increased the competition and pushes me to provide a great product.  I strive to make an amazing product that people will add to their own collection.

We want to thank Justin for his time and wish him the best of luck with his new campaign!
Update: Launching on Kickstarter Wednesday, June 17 at 11:30am in MST, Don't miss out!

You can follow Justin on his company Facebook page, Jamm Pakd Cards and keep up to date with his current and future projects as well as new information on Black Widow.

Deck View: Fantastique Playing Cards

Magic. Automatons. Tribute.

Fantastique is a unique deck of playing cards beautifully inspired by the apparatus of magic‘s golden age and the automatons of Robert-Houdin. When the cards are riffled through like a flip book, the illustrations come to life, animating two of magic's most famous illusions. An orange tree blossoms from an acrobats top hat while a women, having been sawed in half, is pulled apart.

Produced by Dan and Dave and designed by Sveta Dorosheva, each illustration was meticulously altered to achieve the spectacular animation. Accompanied by two unique Jokers and The Turk, a mechanical chess player from the 18th century whom many believed possessed artificial intelligence, represented on the Ace of Spades.

A wonderful tribute to the art and a fun addition to any collection. Very limited availability at JP Games.

Kickstarter: Legends of the Four Kingdoms by Legends Playing Card Co.

If nothing else Legends Playing Card Company has shown its willingness to push the envelope and try different things with its designs and production, they’ve never been one to shy away from things that were said to be not possible or a slight challenge presented by designers in house or otherwise.

Today, LPCC is jumping into new territory once again, but this time it’s not just about card stock or finishes, this time it’s a complete standalone card game, not only that, but being produced on a Bridge size deck as well. The project is Legends of Four Kingdoms, a playing card strategy game based on an ancient Italian card game, but now with a bit of modernization. Four Kingdoms features a 40 card deck complete with custom artwork on every card and produced on a variation of the Classic Finish to help the handling for its more specific use.

I have to admit when Lawrence first mentioned the Bridge sized project I was intrigued but had my reservations as well. But one has to keep an open mind with things, so I patiently waited to see for myself. When I received the decks, well, without getting into the game itself, the deck is cool as hell. It has all those details and design you would expect from a Legends deck, but in a compact package. The tuck has a beautiful color pallet and nice gold foil accents that lend to the theme of the game really well. The tuck also features a “Flip Cover” opening with a small tab closure, on the inside of the flap you’ll find a glimpse of the card art as well as some gold script which reads “Legends of Four Kingdoms – Welcome to the most addictive strategy game of all time”

There were a lot of questions running through my head while looking at this offering, so what better place for answers than from the source itself, Lawrence Sullivan.

What inspired Legends to go the direction of a standalone card game?
I was approached by a friend who loves card games, which was the perfect opportunity to collaborate and create custom packaging that really makes the game stand out!

You mentioned the game was inspired by an ancient Italian card game, how important was it to find the right game mechanics for Four Kingdoms?
Very. The challenge was to maintain the traditional and strategic qualities of the game while making it dynamic and intelligible. On top of this we had to fit it into a solid storyline so that every play makes sense in terms of the four kingdoms war.

Why the decision to print Four Kingdoms as a Bridge Sized deck?
Bridge cards are a close match in size to Italian game cards. Compact and easy to pocket, we also printed some special test cards alongside this deck, that you can pledge for in the higher reward tiers!

What can people expect from the game itself?
A lot of fun game play and compelling artwork right from the start, and as you progress you learn new strategies to increase your skill. L4K is a game of odds in terms of the chances that your opponent has a card that can do the most damage in relation to the one you want to play.
Advanced players can keep track of the game, how many cards are still in the deck, how many leading kingdom soldiers have already been played, and so on. This information will help players form a more complete strategy.

Will there be an expansion into this genre for Legends, whether it’s other games or expansions on existing ones?
Right now L4K is planned as a single and quite limited release of around 1,300 decks available. Depending on demand, we may release further editions down the road, and we are absolutely planning to experiment with new games and packaging design!

What do you hope people take away from the Four Kingdoms project?
Legends of Four Kingdoms wants to be a fun way to connect with people. In addition to being a collectors deck, it provides an interactive experience you can share with friends or random people you meet when travelling. At LEGENDS, we love playing cards, and strive to create the highest quality decks in the world, and L4K is a fantastic opportunity to experiment with new ideas that we think our customers will enjoy.

Legends of Four Kingdoms is now LIVE on Kickstarter so if you’re a fan of card games or looking for something unique for your collection, be sure to check out this very cool release from Legends Playing Cards.

We want to thank Lawrence Sullivan for the opportunity to bring Four Kingdoms to our readers, it’s a real honor and we can’t wait to see what else will be coming from Legends in the near future.

You can also check out all of Legends Playing Card Companies previous custom playing card releases on their Official Website.

Collections: The return of the Tendril by Encarded

The original Tendril’s have always been one of my favorites, bold, colorful……….and hard to find. Encarded has a knack for really re-inventing itself so to speak with each deck, their completely different, but you know it’s an Encarded design. So after 4 other amazing projects Encarded decided to bring back it’s “Modern Classic” for new collectors as well as those who were around for the original Tendril campaign.

The return of the Tendril’s came in a few versions, one true “Companion” deck to the original and a few close relatives. The easiest way to define Nightfall, it’s a “Colorful Negative” version of the original. Nightfall features the same design as the original, but in a bright and bold Blue color scheme. The face cards also mirror the original with a variation in color, a blue background that fades to black edges replaced the white bordered black background and the reds have taken a more “Orange” direction in color, while the blacks have gone with a slightly more intense blue to yellow color variation. One of the features I like most, and it’s a small thing at best, is the Nightfall tuck is the same as the original Tendril tuck, in material and design, which solidifies the connection between the two perfectly.

The Ascendant version comes across as a very close relative to the original Tendril, still keeping the beautiful organic feel of the original, but incorporating a bold green color scheme with some new spherical line work. Greens and Blues blend nicely together on the face and key cards with the Greens taking the place of the Black spots and a light Blue the Red spots. The Court cards hold true to the Tendril originals and the Jokers get an update to the intricate sphere design from the tuck case. Speaking of the Tuck case, that too got a bit of an update in material, this time in a soft touch Black stock with a black foil to accent the Tendril’s and a bold Green Foil for the new spheres, suite markers and print. Overall a beautiful deck that fits right in with the “Family”

The Project did offer backers a few treats, one in the way of a handmade “Mega-Tuck” that housed 3 decks, one of which was the original Tendril along with its new additions. Those were limited to 32 and no doubt due to the scarcity of the original deck. The other was the Tendril Ascendant Special Edition. This was another handmade tuck witch featured a flecked black tuck with gold foil accents and Paul Carpenters Signature, the decks were also limited to only 50 and are truly stunning.

The Tendril series is eye-catching, functional and collectible; Encarded covered all bases with the new release by giving collectors another opportunity to enjoy the design and concept of the original without having to break the bank to do so, but also gave die hard collectors something to add to their RARE category. If you can, find the original Tendrils for your collection, but this is one that is very scarce and will put a ding in the wallet, but if you really just enjoy the concept and presentation of the organic feel of the Tendril concept, pick up Nightfall and Ascendant, they’ll more then fill your needs.

Both decks are available on the Encarded site along with a few cool add-ons, the 3 deck bamboo stand is one of my favorites. Encarded did an awesome job with the Tendril follow up and Paul is one designer who always has my attention with each new release.

You can visit Encarded on their web site as well as follow them on social media on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
