7 Questions with Gustavo Borboa of The Kingdom of the Dead Playing Cards

The Kingdom of the Dead Playing Cards by Sextante Studio is inspired by the Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead. The deck is a reinterpretation of one of the oldest traditions, the design respects the classic images of playing cards. The team at Sextante Studio, headed by Gustavo Borboa have reimagined the symbolism, colors and traditional characters into a modern aesthetic.

We were able to catch-up with Gustavo for a quick chat about the team at Sextante Studio and the design and idea behind The Kingdom of the Dead Playing Cards.

For those of us who don’t know, tell us a little about yourself and Sextante Studio?
I am a professional illustrator and since I was a child, I tried to sell my drawings and finally, people pay for my work, that’s amazing! I have worked on comic books, graphic novels and publicity illustration for marketing agencies and sales companies. I love to illustrating children's book and I have also an artistic career which I developed in addition to my design career. I founded Sextante Studio with some partners like Carlos Maccelli- Architect & Designer, we offer creative solutions to clients around the world.

What do you guys love most about being a designer? And what are some favorite projects you’ve worked on?
I think, the best part is making dreams a reality. I mean, as designers, we can take an idea and turn it into real life. My first comic book collection was one of my favorites, it was like a dream. Of course, our most recent project, the Mexican designed playing cards deck.

Can you describe the Kingdom of the Dead Playing Cards? and why you’re passionate about it?
El reino de los muertos (The Kingdom of the Dead) is a professional deck of cards inspired by the Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead. It is a collector’s item as the graphics and figures have great artistic value. The members of the court —the King, Queen and Jack—, are works of art that were painted by hand in watercolor. The traditional figures in the cards have been reimagined in the rich traditions of Mexico.

The deck is produced in accordance with international standards, from texturized linen cardstock imported from France and complies with the quality requirements for use in casinos. The project is a reinterpretation of one of our oldest traditions, the design respects the classic images of playing cards. We have reimagined the symbolism, colors and traditional characters into modern aesthetics. Each image was created with profound respect and significant research. Bright and cheery colors are contrasted with dark, elegant borders.

The traditional figures are transformed into irreverent and playful characters with a touch of solemnity. The illustrations are dynamic and detailed. There are textures of perforated paper. Playing with these cards will be an experience that will take you on a journey through the layers of tradition encapsulated in each card.

Talk to us a bit about going from the first draft to the final version. How did you get to this finished product?
At first, I analyzed the geometry of the classic court figures and discovered a lot of interesting details. I took the main shapes and created a grid, in which I placed my new characters. After that, I defined the outlines and shapes with ink and digitalized the first drawing. The next step was to print those outlines over special cotton paper to create a guide path to paint over with watercolors. Finally, we took a high-resolution picture of the artwork and proceeded with the digital manipulation to get the final card images.

What was your most brilliant breakthrough when designing the deck?
To share that ancient and magic feeling with the users. I think the users can feel the magic and the power of the traditions through the images. That’s the result of months of work, research, analysis and design.

What’s next? Can we expect more deck designs from Sextante Studio?
Sure, we are thinking about taking other historical concepts maybe from other parts of the world and maybe related to magic.

Finally, what are your favorite playing cards?
I love Contraband from Theory11

Thanks for your time, Gustavo!

Cardistry: Learn Cardestroy with Shivraj Morzaria

This is a follow-up to our article on Cardestroy, a mesmerizing sub-genre of Cardistry popularize by Shivraj Morzaria. The basic idea behind Cardestroy is based on an arrangement done on a flat surface, hands or anywhere possible and put in motion.

Here are TWO Cardestroy tutorial from the man himself, originally published on his Instagram account (@shivraj_morzaria). Published with permission from Shivraj.

|| Pie Tutorial || You will need: A cutter and a card and guts to destroy the card 😜 Instructions:- Step 1: Fold a card in half horizontally and then unfold it. Step 2: Cut the card diagonally from both the sides leaving the borders un-cut or leaving very less portion of the card uncut in case of borderless cards. Step 3: Hold the card gripping from ends of the triangular shaped cutout as follows. Step 4: Pull the ends diagonally to the opposite sides as follows and it will give a really interesting formation. Step 5: Reverse 'Step 4' and you can get back to the initial position looking like a card. That's it! A small contribution to the supporters 😊 Shoot questions below (if any)!⬇ Also you can download it, other tutorials and videos in HD from website, link in my bio! Follow @cardestroy for more! ||Sponge Pop Tutorial|| Instructions:- Step 1: Fold a card in half and then unfold it making a right angle. (Fold angle roughly 90°) Step 2: Repeat the process five more times. Step 3: Arrange the six folds on any flat surface as shown above. Step 4: Place your hands on both the sides of the arrangement, resting on the flat surface and slowly start pushing the arrangement from both the sides using the sides of your index fingers and the compression will lead the move to pop into two cubes like arrangement. Step 5: Simply take your hands off and the two cubes will stand steady. That's it! Just a small contribution to the supporters, one of my favourite cardestroy move of all time, enjoy! 😊 Shoot questions below (if any)!⬇ #cardestroy #exploringmechanics #cardistry #cardporn #Diy #ctutorial

Card Gear: Seasons

Card Gear is our monthly feature dedicated to discovering new inventory, setup and accessories used every day by card designers, cardists, magicians and collectors. The concept originated from the popular social media site, Instagram: #passthepockets. Whenever one of these hashtags come up on the social news feed, there's always something new to discover, no matter who that person is.

For the first card gear of 2017, we have the EDC of Alexander Chin, founder of Seasons Playing Cards (@seasonsplayingcards) which released the Seasons, Magna Carta, and most recently Apothecary series. The 27 year-old designer Chicago-based designer also created Portfolio52 which is the world's largest online playing card database dedicated to helping collector's manage and grow their collections. He has an obsession for cards as a medium of portable interactive art.

Alex has a background in Architecture and is extremely interested in packaging and interactive design experiences. Currently when not designing cards Alex is writing his first novel which has been a long standing bucket list item he's hoping to finally cross-off for 2017.

Alex's gear (Italics are Alex's comments):

+ Skagen Watch with Secondary Date Dial (I use the secondary dial as a visual progress bar for the month which helps me stay on track with my goals.)
+ Samsung Galaxy S7
+ Home Made Black Leather Wallet
+ Magna Carta Royals Deck
+ Jaybird Wireless Headphones (I'm super big on podcasts and audiobooks and when you move around a lot in the office, wireless makes the biggest difference especially when drawing.)
+ Stabilo Black Marker (Any gel/felt black pen 0.4 or under is good by me.)
+ Mini Post-It Pad (I used to carry a small notebook but it was too bulky. The post it pad is great for reminding me of my priorities for the day or jotting down random ideas so I don't forget. I like keeping things physical over using my phone for this kind of stuff.)

Kickstarter: 7 Questions with Edvin Krishtofor of Gracia Playing Cards

Designed by the team at Empire Arts Co from Estonia, Gracia is a unique deck of playing cards seeking funding on Kickstarter. The deck features gold foiled ornaments on a dark blue tuck box and a fully custom artwork on the face cards. According to Edvin Krishtofor, founder of Empire Arts Co, the faces were drawn by 12-14 years art school students with the aim of coming up with something different based on standard playing card faces.

The result was extraordinary and the vision of the students amazed the team. As such, they would like to save their work on something special and decided to use it in a deck of playing cards. If the funding is successful, Empire Art Co are going to give to each student a deck of Gracia.

We managed to catch-up with Edvin to chat about Empire Arts Co, and the idea and design evolution of Gracia Playing Cards.

For those of us who don’t know, tell us a little about yourself and Empire Arts Co?
We are a group of freelance artists based in Northern Europe. We have finished the art school and we think that we pursue our future with creativity and art. Also, we have other hobbies like magic and cardistry, so those hobbies put us on the path of playing card design and development.

What do you guys love most about being a designer? And what are some favorite projects you guys have worked on?
We love the way we can use our intellect and creativity so widely in our job, we love the feeling of being able to make the world just a little bit better. Design as a discipline never stands still and as designers we are constantly developing. First playing card designing experience was Arbores deck and it was our one of the most beloved projects. One member of our team was working on "Luxuriosa” playing card deck which was also successful.

Can you describe the Gracia Playing Cards? and why are you passionate about it?
The dark blue background brings out the gold ornaments on the tuck case. All the Gold parts of ornaments will be foiled, including text such as "Gracia", Tuck sides, bottom and other elements. The fine detail of each hand drawn card is reminiscent of a hard working. Gracia will have a print run of 200+. Each deck will be numbered and this deck will never be re-printed. We don’t know how, but somehow we were able to combine simplicity and complexity in this deck, so we like the result.

Talk to us a bit about going from the first draft to the final version. How did you get to this finished product?
Our work is always distributed, everyone does their part. Our main artist drew backgrounds, ornaments and icons like spades, hearts, clubs and diamonds for about 2 months. I was working on Gracia back and tuck box. I drew all tuck box ornaments and animals on paper and then worked with graphic editors. There was much discussion, ideas and work with children for card faces experiment, so it took about six months, but through the efforts and teamwork, we made it.

How did you get feedback?
We do a lot of graphic designs and paintings for art schools and schools in our country and always have a positive feedback from teachers and viewers. Also, we got positive feedback from social media about our last project called "Arbores“, which was successfully funded.

With so many playing card projects competing for funding, why should potential backers choose your deck?
This project is interesting because it uses a lot of foil. Gracia will be a wonderful part of the collection of any magician or cardist. Also, we have connected 12-14 years old art school students to make paintings of the faces. We carried out a survey the aim of which was to see how children can make something different based on standard playing card faces. The result can be unusual and irregular, but the vision of students amazed us! We would like to save their works in something unusual and we decided to use it in our deck of playing cards design. After we are going to give to each student one deck of Gracia, as a thank you.

Finally, what are your favorite playing cards?
Hmmm… We think Madison Blanks :D To be honest, we have always liked the harmony of colors and elegant design of Virtuoso SS16.

Thank you, Edvin and all the best! If want to support Gracia Playing Cards, you can find it on Kickstarter here!

Gracia will be printed by TM Cards and pledge starts from €12 (early bird). Gracia will have a print run of 200. Each deck will be numbered and will never be re-printed.

5 Things You Need To Know About the Relaunch of DYSTOPIA Playing Cards

[Update] DYSTOPIA Playing Cards are now LIVE on Kickstarter!

On Friday, January 13, the team at Joker and the Thief is relaunching DYSTOPIA Playing Cards on Kickstarter. The original campaign was canceled and James Milaras, founder of Joker and the Thief has reworked the campaign. Here is a list of 5 things that you need to know for the relaunch of DYSTOPIA.

1. Dystopia will no longer be printed by Expert Playing Card Company. Instead, Joker and the Thief has moved production to the United States Playing Card Company. Printed under supervision of Dan and Dave Industries on their signature “thin stock” and finish, Dystopia is expected to handle brilliantly and be the best handling deck in our range.

2. During the relaunch campaign for Dystopia, the funding goal will be dramatically less than that of the previous campaign. With a far more achievable goal, Joker and the Thief is expected to fund quickly with the help of its valued backers.

3. Fulfilment. Switching from Art of Play to Amazon.com means that overall shipping costs within the USA are far lower than all of Joker and the Thief’s previous campaigns. International rates on multiple decks are far fairer than previous campaigns, with backers from the European Union further having a slightly discounted rate.

4. Luxury Tuck Box. Joker and the Thief has turned to professional letterpress studio Clove St. Press to create the tuck box for Dystopia Playing Cards. If you are unfamiliar with Clove St. Press, they create all the tuck boxes for Art of Play and Dan and Dave Industries. The same manufacturing methods are used by Theory11 and Ellusionist. With specialized machinery, Clove St. will be able to use luxurious, imported dyed paper, and apply rich foiling and deep, prominent embossing to Dystopia’s tucks. Capped with a custom shaped seal, it’s bound to be a stand out in your collection. For quality control, Art of Play will be assembling and inspecting the final product.

5. On launch day, Joker and the Thief will make available limited Early Bird Specials… at USD$10 per deck. Plus for those of you who live in the USA, these specials are shipped to you for FREE.

[Update] DYSTOPIA Playing Cards are now LIVE on Kickstarter!

Will you survive? DYSTOPIA will launch on Kickstarter Friday, 13 January 6PM PST.
