Art of Play's Off the Wall Playing Cards Gets Colorful

Where do we start with these? Art of Play's brand new deck of playing cards is unlike any other. Think of it as an anti-minimalist deck with bold and wild colored aesthetics that are almost certain to turn heads.

Designed in South Africa by Studio Muti (Instagram: @studiomuti), Off the Wall Playing Cards are inspired by 80s surf and skate culture in sunny California. This limited edition deck features a borderless back-design, oversized court cards and a vibrant tuck box printed with shiny silver foil.

Certainly one of our favorite deck release this year. Not only is it fun and accompanied by energetic color palettes, it is also beautifully designed in an abstract way.

Off the Wall will certainly add some character to your next card game as they are for cardistry. Printed by the United States Playing Card Co. on Dan and Dave's trademark thin stock. Available now from Art of Play for $15.

Deck View: Implicit Playing Cards

Stunning. Modern. Gold.

Conceptualized by Nathan Darma, Implicit Playing Cards are a modern deck of playing cards designed by Gart Gartsman. The deck has been designed with the modern magician and cardist in mind. The design elements of this luxurious deck are inspired from many decks, such as the circular design from the Orbit Deck, as well as decorative corners of Chris Ramsay’s Memento Mori.

The modern deck features relatively standard number cards, fully custom court cards, jokers and a gorgeous Ace of Spades. Combined, these elements make for an incredible looking deck, housed in a stunning tuck with interior and exterior gold foil, beautifully printed by Hanson Chien Production Co.

Consolidate and Display Your Playing Cards Collection- Carat Cases

I've had a few questions lately about how I display my deck collection. So, here's what I use... Carat Cases. Acrylic deck displays aren't a new concept, but these Carat cases are a simple and elegant way to display your decks.

Carat cases ingeniously incorporate little magnets to keep your decks secured in the display case and comes in various sizes and shapes.

That makes a ton of sense for decks you want to change decks in the display without dedicating too much time removing and replacing them. Also, it is a great way to display the deck on your desk or cupboard without dedicating precious desk real estate to other chunky displays.

They come in various sizes and dimensions to meet the needs of your collection. Check it out at caratcardcases.com. For the coming months, we will be showcasing some incredible decks stored in Carat Cases on our new monthly Carat Collections feature. Stay tuned!

First Look of Untitled V2 Playing Cards by Adam Borderline

[Update] Pre-order now on at borderlineadam.com

Adam Borderline is set to release his second deck this year, Untitled V2 Playing Cards! The deck exposes the artists behind the art. On the surface its appearance seems somewhat similar to the popular V1's, however, on closer inspection, you'll see hidden meanings and messages within. Adam explained,
In order for me to share my art in a way that’s personal yet obtainable I wanted to create a raw deck with very few post processes. The original image as seen on the jokers is from a painting, then photographed and mirrored 4 times. Everyone sees something different which is why it’s so special

The front of the tuck leaves a blank space where the back design should be, this signifies the emptiness or rather the lack of understanding between the art and the viewer.

Inside, the mirrored back design signifies that art is a reflection of self, created from one's own perception of reality. For the face cards, the hearts 2-10 will have one pip enhanced to incorporate the back design, however, the AKQJ have been left unaltered. This signifies the untitled ones, born from nothing, with nothing. The court cards were often used to resemble royalty.

Finally, the Ace of spades has been enlarged and incorporates the back design, with a faint Untitled logo beneath it. To maintain a consistent color palette of the deck, the standard blue from USPCC has been removed, leaving just red, yellow and black.

[Update] Pre-order now on at borderlineadam.com

Untitled V2 Playing Cards will be available for pre-order on Friday, 27th July 2018 at borderlineadam.com

Pizza Playing Cards Relaunched on Kickstarter

The team at Passione Playing Cards just relaunched Pizza Playing Cards, inspired by the famous Italian food and the worldwide appeal it has gained.

On the relaunch, founder Riccardo Conturbia told Kardify,
We updated  the tuck case and the back design. Now the tuck case is more "traditional" and probably less extravagant. Since we changed the printer, we also felt that the old back was too derivative of the Rider Back and that's why we reworked it to be more coherent with the faces and the new tuck design.
The goal of the deck is to represent fun, likable characters from all over the world cooking, serving or delivering pizza. Hence, the fully custom hand-illustrated court cards are represented by different nationalities- Italians, Americans, Asians, and the Middle East, each with their own unique narrative.
For example, the diamond "peperoni" suits are represented by Bob, who owns a restaurant in Kentucky. Known as "the King of pizza", his "pepperoni" pizza is to die for! His beautiful daughter, Harper serves at the tables like a true Queen and it's not uncommon to see customers flirting with her. Tyler, the Jack, is a fitness fanatic and sometimes he takes the long road to deliver your pizza, just to train more. But don't worry, we were told that he's never late!

For the relaunch, when you pledge for a tier with 4, 8 or 12 decks, you'll get cool 1,2 or 3 "pizza boxes", respectively. Brilliant! Pledge starts at $15 and Pizza Playing Cards will be printed by the Legends Playing Card Co.

Card Flash: Ragnarok Playing Cards by Design Imperator

The team at Design Imperator has just completed the fulfillment of Ragnarok Playing Cards, which was funded on Kickstarter late last year within 6 hours of the campaign launch. Congratulations to the team for a very well executed campaign!

Ragnorak is a fully custom Norse-themed deck and is the sequel to their previous release, Midgard Playing Cards. The Jormungand (Dark Blue) and the Fenris (Dark Brown) Editions features fully custom pips, indices, aces, and courts.

The card backs showcase Norse artwork inspired from original knotwork and wood carving designs, both set in a mirrored composition printed with metallic silver and copper inks.

The design elements, particularly the use of runic inscriptions utilized throughout are truly unique and very well incorporated into the theme of the deck. The meticulously hand-illustrated courts along with the darker tone of the deck highlight drama, intensity, and an epic battle.

Both tucks are beautifully embossed, hot-stamped with metal foil- silver foil on dark blue tuck for Jormungand and copper foil on dark brown on the Fenris edition. Backers will be pleasantly surprised how well these decks turned out. Printed by NPCC on linen card stock, which handles reasonable well but requires a short break-in period.

Art of Play Releases Art & Machine Playing Cards!

Fill your game nights with modern art, the Art & Machine Playing Cards is rich with visual representation of the history of modern art, design, and machine technology. Designed by Ryan Hewlett and produced by our friends at Art of Play, Art & Machine takes a closer look at four moments in the history of art and design: the Bauhaus era, mid-century, the late 20th-century and the age of mobile.

The idea of the deck was to create something centered around ephemera or art in general but evolved into a focus on art and design and its relationship with modern technology.

Each suit in the deck focuses on one of these four moments in art history - the new typography of the Bauhaus era represented by Spades, mid-century book cover design by Hearts, the late 20th-century silkscreen poster aesthetic by Clubs, and the Diamonds represents the contemporary art and design in the age of mobile.

The artwork for each of the time periods was inspired by Piet Zwart, Alvin Lustig, Aesthetic Apparatus, and Jesus Perea. The face card feels like a little poster or piece of ephemera- like an eclectic collection, that gives the impression that each of the cards could have been gathered one-by-one and curated into a set.

The back design features a minimal x-logo on a striking contemporary orange background with thin white borders. Packaged inside a gorgeous letterpress-printed tuck box. The deck is a unique blend of vintage aesthetics and contemporary feel. Somehow, it feels familiar... yet new.

Printed by the US Playing Card Co. on Dan and Dave's trademark thin-stock preferred by cardists. Available now from Art of Play for $15.

The card backs have been meticulously designed to give card flourishes a clean and minimal look. At first glance, the deck may not look like much, but the attention to detail and creativity of each design element is truly impressive. Printed by US Playing Card Company and available now from you favorite Murphys Magic retailers.
