Kickstarter: 3 Questions with Taty Gomez of Delusion Playing Cards

Delusion Playing Cards is a minimal and elegant deck designed for magic and cardistry by Taty Gomez, a Spanish magician from Sevilla. The goal was to create the perfect deck in his own style and share it with the magic community. After two years of development and brainstorming with the help of Manuel Jesus Martín and other friends, the Delusion deck is now seeking funds on Kickstarter.

The deck sports a predominant English Green colorway with a hint of teal, giving the deck a touch of elegance. Delusion features a custom Ace of Spades, jokers and card backs with the logo showcased prominently on the card backs, surrounded by a circle that defines the deck. The courts and pips are pretty much standard but recolored to give the deck a consistent look.

Last week, we had a chat with Taty about the inspiration behind Delusion Playing Cards, support from the community and his favorite flourish and cardistry deck.

What is your inspiration behind the Delusion Playing Cards? How did you come up with the idea?
Like a lot of magicians, I love playing cards, and also I like the design. Two years ago, I thought to my self if I can have my own deck of cards. That would be great, because that deck will be perfect for me! And then, I started designing it.

About the design, I wanted to create a deck with a minimal and elegant design, but also with a vibrant and fresh view. I think that the color of the deck matches perfectly with this idea, out of the classic blue or red decks. Another idea is that the two diamonds in the center of the back. They are a minimal and symmetrical version of my own logo. And there are also two letters, that are my initials: T for Taty, and G for Gomez. This is a little and fun detail that I wanted to put on the cards.

We first noticed the deck on Instagram. What do you think of the community in terms of the feedback and support that you’ve been getting so far?
I’m really grateful and surprised with all the help that I received when I started the campaign. I never thought that I would reach the 50% of the goal in two days. I hope that new backers will continue to help support this project, and we will be able to get Delusion FUNDED. It will be crazy for me.

Finally, what are your favorite playing card decks?
And about decks, I like minimal and elegant decks, because I use them for magic. I like decks with classic face cards, because I use the deck for magic tricks. This is the explanation of the classic face cards of the delusion deck. If I want to make flourishes for a video, I like decks like Sirius-B or Virtuoso, because of their colours. I also like Fontaines because of their minimal lovely design.

If you liked what you read here and would like to support the Delusion Playing Cards, head to Kickstarter here! Pledge starts at $12 and the deck will be printed by Hanson Chien Production Co. on Legendary finish with Luxury stock.

Card Radar: Decade of Cards: 1980s by Second Marriage Studio

Decade of Cards designed by Erin Rommel is a deck of playing cards that celebrate the styles and sounds of the 1980s. The deck sports a retro vibe, portraying the style and sounds of the 1980s.

The deck is fully custom from the Ace of Spades, pips, indices, Jokers and court cards. Each suit represents a different clique: the MC's (Diamonds), New Romantics (Hearts), metalheads (Spades), and nightclubbers Clubs). Iconic characters inspired the court cards set against a vibrant ’80s style design backdrop.

The eye-catching card backs take their cues from traditional playing cards with shapes, patterns and colors reference Memphis design, a top trend of the 80s. The Second Marriage Studio branding is prominently featured on the mirrored card back.

Very cool deck of cards with gorgeous retro colors throughout. This is probably the best 80s themed deck we've seen so far. If you are looking for one, The Decade of Cards: 1980s Deck is currently available now from ETSY and printed on 330 gsm smooth card stock.

Kickstarter: Caribbean Wind Playing Cards by SVI Group

What are some of the things that you associate with the Caribbean? Beaches, rum and pirates? That sounds like a setting for Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise. SVI Group will reintroduce notorious and famous characters living in the Golden Age of Pirates.
There have been a few projects about pirates on Kickstarter over the last several years and Caribbean Wind Playing Cards will feel like another project droning on the same theme. One differentiation will be the inclusion of Royal Navies from various countries combating the threat of the Caribbean pirates.

There will be two editions to Caribbean Winds, Pirates and Royal Charter which are clearly differentiated by red and blue respectively. The biggest selling point for potential backers will be the Kickstarter only exclusive premium Caribbean Wind deck which comes in black.
There are other add-ons such as a unique dealer coin and also a luxurious wooden box that can contain 2 decks of cards. The cards will be printed by Smart Playing Cards Company (SPCC).

Kickstarter: Hunter of York Playing Cards by Nicolai Aaroe

Funded in 48 hours, the Hunter of York Playing Cards are inspired by the witch-hunting era and the Tulip Mania set in York, 1636. This is the first volume in the Florus Drama series by artist Nicolai Aaroe.

These enchanting decks have been Nicolai's ‘go-to’ project for the past 3 years. He started working on the design about the same time the Indictus Playing Cards was launched on Kickstarter. The deck design has been kept a secret up until now and the reactions have been overwhelming.

Hunters of York started off as a theme that captures the tension of affection between a man and a woman in the renaissance era. The court characters have been illustrated in collaboration with another Danish master of the pen, Martin Helgren. On the design, Nicolai told Kardify,
I had so many ideas about the concept of ‘the hunt’ that the theme needed to be expanded with more factors of ‘hunt and ambition’. Hunters of York is set in 1636 and it is very much inspired by the Tulip Mania of that time to give it an authentic and historic touch of elegance in the form of floral artwork. The fact that the movie Tulip Fever came out in the end of the development process was pure coincidence, but it formed an obvious inspiration to the final touches of the designs.

This project has been hugely influenced by the ideas generated through creative sparring with Marianne Larsen. She has really made a great impact on major design choices, such as the beautiful tuck boxes.

The original designs were discarded completely and new designs were made based on fresh ideas and a rich sparring on the elements of what makes a great and interesting tuck case.

With the successful funding of the deck, Nicolai is motivated to continue working on the second volume in the Florus Drama series. Nicolai continued,
Florus Drama is a series where I will experiment with colors and story telling in a very unique way, blended with deluxe features on every aspect of the design process.

Two editions of the Hunter of York Playing Cards will be made available during the Kickstarter campaign- Master and Mistress Edition. The decks will be printed by NPCC and pledge starts at DKK$89 (USD$14) on Kickstarter.

Kings Wild Launches Subscription Service: Here's What $25 a Month Gets You

Kings Wild has just launched its subscription service, which for $25 per month will give subscribers access to a deck of playing cards each month. For the Kings Wild Shorts subscription service, designer Jackson Robinson will release a small run of 144 decks all exploring vastly different styles and themes. Jackson Robinson told Kardify,
My hope is to push my self and widen the range of styles that I create with my favorite art, playing cards. For me, it is going to allow for a much wider range of styles and themes that will keep the hobby of collecting new and fresh for the collectors. As well as put some of the intrigue and game/hunt into collecting.

The the first deck will be Equinox, which was shipped out to subscribers end of last week. The elegant deck features feature full-color printed tuck on the inside and outside and comes with a separate white numbered seal that will be numbered 000/144.

The tuck case will have a brushed gold foil seal. Inside, the deck is fully custom with face cards familiar enough to play with. Simple yet elegant!

At the moment, the service is offering a single deck a month. Eventually, Kings Wild Shorts does plan to start offering new features to subscribers. According to Jackson,
You will really see this in the new year when I release my collector's card. It was inspired by when I collected baseball cards as a kid. From January, each subscriber will get a Collector's card that will have 12 empty slots and with each months deck, you will get a unique stamp that you fill each slot with. Then at the end of the year, you will turn in the card and you get the card returned with a very special deck you can only get by turning in a full card.
At the moment, all 144 slots of Kings Wild Shorts have been filled. More slots will be opened as time progresses. To keep up-to-date will all things Kings Wild, follow them on Instagram (@kingswildproject).

Kickstarter: Water Margin Playing Cards by Paul Guo

There are often western literature inspired playing cards on Kickstarter and this time, a Chinese Classic became the inspiration. The project creator, Paul Guo, used one of the Four Great Novels, Water Margin or 水滸傳 as background for Water Margin Playing Cards.

There are one hundred and eight heros in the novel but not all of them are featured in the playing card project. Only fourteen characters were used in the royal court portraits and as joker cards. The art style of the royal court portraits follows the Ukiyo-e style which resembles the style used in making old Chinese playing cards which were based on characters from Water Margin novel.

Although there are no special add-ons and this project being a single edition launch, there is a still a collectable value to it. The slightly vintage style of the illustration and the porcelain style of the card back and tuck box heightens the vintage look.

Modernist. Geometric. Gouache.

From the team at Uusi, the BRuT Limited Edition is a modernist playing card deck. The deck was originally funded on Kickstarter as a companion to Uusi's Tarot deck. The gorgeous artwork is inspired by Early 20th Century Modernism, Art Brut (or Outsider Art) and the forceful, geometric look of Brut Architecture. All imagery in this deck is hand-painted using gouache – a type of watercolor medium that is similar to watercolor but more highly pigmented.

The BRuT Playing Card deck features 52 playing cards and two jokers all with original, eye-catching artwork that makes them ideal for magic and card games, yet at the same time very familiar and recognizable by players and spectators alike. Printed by EPCC on their famous Master Finish card stock with a linen finish.
