Toronto-based design firm, Humble Raja in collaboration with Art of Play has launched their deck, Forbidden Forest on Kickstarter. The enchanting deck captures South Asia's most imaginative mythological creatures in an eccentric set of playing cards.
Inside, the beautiful card backs are inspired by antique marbled endpapers. The court cards are fully custom, from a horse-headed demon to rivaling monkeys, the artists have reinterpreted twelve fantastic animals to breathe new life into ancient tales. Each card comes with stunning Gold Foil.
Each creature is a window into how our ancestors interpreted the world - representing their fears and uncertainties and captures their morals and hopes. According to the Kickstarter campaign page,
We want to open questions and create opportunities to exchange stories across generations and cultures. This is our way of sharing a deeper aspect of our culture with you, focusing not on what divides us but what connects us all.
The playing card symbol indicates the creature's habitat (♦️ the jungle, ♣️ sea, ♠️ grasslands, and ♥️ sky)- these environments are beautifully illustrated on each ace.
The deck is packaged in a gorgeous tuck-case of extraordinary detail featuring embossed elements and foil accents.
Printed by The United States Playing Card Company on proprietary thin-stock. Pledge starts at $19 on Kickstarter.
