Two years ago, Docs Playing Cards collaborated with Native Tongue Studio to produced Tough Luck Playing Cards. The popular deck won 3rd Place in the UC DOTY 2020 Awards for Best Tuck and with the series having such a large following, founder Michael McClure decided it needed a second version.
There is not much difference between the original edition with the second edition. The first edition comes with black as the background color, while the second edition features blue colorway. Both versions come in the standard bordered edition and the borderless “Shadows” edition.
The card back design features a repeating pattern of a skull-and-dagger with flower tiles. The bordered design is ideal for EDC deck while the borderless design is great for card spreads and fans.
The faces of the cards are custom designed. The numbered cards are using customized pips. The Ace of Spades featured an intricate artwork of the bigger pip guarded by two rabbits along with the deck name and the number ’76’ in Roman numerals.
The court cards featured artworks of undead royals – each of them showcasing an unfortunate event that led to each of the royal’s death: such as 7 years of bad luck from breaking a mirror, drawing a “dead man’s hand” during poker, setting head on fire, and many more.
The Jokers featured identical artwork of an anthropomorphic fox holding a wooden plank by his neck to set up a game of “3 Card Monte”, a favorite game by street hustlers. The standard edition’s faces come in classic black and red color to differentiate the suits, while the “Shadows” edition’s faces are in achromatic black and white – red suits are shown in grey.
The tuck box defines the different variants of the deck series in Tough Luck. The standard edition will be packaged inside the standard box printed in CMYK. The Limited edition features a premium paper cardstock box complete with metallic foiling and embossed elements. There will be custom seals for the Limited Edition and the Gilded Editions. A mini version of the decks is available during this campaign.
Pledge starts with $26 for a set of Standard Edition decks OR $32 for a set of Limited Edition decks on Kickstarter.
