Urashima Tarou Playing Cards: A Mythical Journey Through Japanese Folklore

Step into the enchanting tale of Urashima Tarou with this beautifully crafted deck inspired by the timeless Japanese fairy tale. Designed by Bloom Playing Cards, this collection brings to life the poignant story of a fisherman who ventures to the magical underwater Dragon Palace, only to return to a world transformed by the passage of time.

Urashima Tarou Playing Cards is a tribute to this legendary tale, weaving together themes of youth, mortality, and the allure of the unknown. The Louver Tuck Box captures the heart of the story, showcasing a mechanism that transforms Urashima Tarou’s image from a vibrant young man to a frail, aged figure. This duality mirrors the fleeting nature of time, a central theme of the tale.

Inside, the card backs of the Louver Editions feature an animation deck that brings the story to life. Flipping through the cards reveals the symbolic opening of the tamatebako (jeweled box), depicting Urashima’s dramatic transformation. In contrast, the Origami Editions feature minimalist designs inspired by sea turtle shell patterns, celebrating simplicity and elegance.

The number cards are designed as a transformation deck, seamlessly blending numbers into intricate illustrations that narrate Urashima’s journey. The court cards feature youthful and aged depictions of key characters like Urashima Tarou and Princess Otohime, symbolizing the story’s themes of innocence, wisdom, and the passage of time.

Four editions are available during the campaign- Green Louver, Velvet Louver, Blue Origami, and Black Origami. The Origami Tuck Box unfolds like traditional Japanese origami, while a 6-in-1 Puzzle Half Brick Box combines six decks into a larger, interconnected artwork, enhancing the collector’s experience.

Printed with premium materials by Room One, the Urashima Tarou Playing Cards invites players to explore the delicate interplay of past, present, and the mysteries of life.

Pledge starts at $14 on Kickstarter.
